I’m not sure the Valley British Auto Club received quite that many on Sept. 19 at the 49th Annual Fresno Scottish games, but we were welcomed greatly. As in years past, the contingent of LBCs met at Chandler field for the short drive to the entrance at Kearney Park. This year the group included 2 TR-3s, 2 MGAs, an A-H 3000, a Jaguar XKE, a Jag 420G, a Mini Cooper, a MGB, a MG Midget, and a TR-6.
Upon arriving, the first order of business for Morris was to find a food booth offering a Scottish egg. This was discovered at a booth that I distinctly remember had ‘Celtic’ in its name. After the protein rush, it was time to check out Clan Row and the Living History Village.
A number of club members were also doing the same thing but looking at the different events including Youth Athletics, sheep herding Border Collie demonstration, and all the different Scottish musical and dancing exhibitions. The Heavy Athletics are also a VBAC favorite with the likes of Open/Braemanr Stone Throw, Scottish Hammer, Caber Toss, Weight Over Bar, and Sheaf Toss. Of course, the all-time favorite of all lads & lassies is the Order of the Gauntlet & Rose 5 on 5 Medieval Battles. These can best be described as well sized guys dressed up in 75+ pound armor trying to beat each others’ brains in. What a spectacle!
Finally, the event that caused the most interest to members of the VBAC was the Scottish Whiskey tasting event. After a year’s hiatus, this event attracted Jon B, Jay, Martin, Jon F, and Christopher. Each member had a different favorite and I’m sure the group will be back next year.
After a final look of all things Scottish, it was homeward bound. Thanks again to the Scottish Society of Central California and to Pres. Jon for organizing this great event.
Til next time:
Safety fast!
