2024 Scottish Games 9/21

Scottish Games, 2024

By Morris Garagian

The VBAC was privileged to be invited to the 47th Annual Fresno Scottish Gathering and Games on September 21st. We have been invited to this event in the past and have had a great time, and this year was no exception.

We again formed up at Fresno’s iconic Chandler Field with 2 MGAs, a Mini Cooper, a Sunbeam Alpine, a TR-3, a TR-6, an MGB-GT, and a Jaguar XK, ready to roll at 7:00 a.m. By arriving this earlier, we were guaranteed we would be first in line for a Scottish egg breakfast.

We were warmly greeted by the Scottish organizers at Kearney Park and spent our day taking in the sights and sounds of the Gathering and showing our British iron. Each one of us had our special interests and we, as a group and individually, visited Clan Row, the Heavy Athletics (including Caber Toss and Hammer Throw), Highland Dancing, Border Collie Sheep Herding, and various other events. One particular event that Pres Jon & Jay were interested in and got tickets for was the Scotch tasting. I did not hear anything negative from either of them the rest of the day after their participation!

Of course, the audience pleasing Medieval Battles exhibited by the Order of the Gauntlet and Rose had to be seen: 5 participants on either side dressed up in 75# armor and proceeding to beat each others’ brains out in 95F degree heat. Much fun on a Fresno summer’s day.

After checking out the remainder of the activities, it was time to head home.

Many thanks to the Scottish Society of Central California for the invitation and to Pres Jon for organizing this activity.

‘Til next time:
