2023 Hanging the Flags

Clovis, California: Honoring the Heroes of 9/11

Clovis, California is home to The California 9/11 Memorial, a poignant tribute spearheaded by former Pelco CEO, David McDonald. Dedicated to remembering the 2,977 lives lost in the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, this beautiful permanent monument stands as a symbol of the community's commitment to "Never Forget."

The annual 9/11 Memorial ceremony, held at the site, draws citizens, first responders, and military personnel who come together to pay homage to the brave spirits who sacrificed their lives in the efforts to save others. This commemoration ceremony, along with the dedicated monument, is the largest of its kind outside of New York City.

On the morning of Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, members from the Valley British Auto Club (VBAC) seized a unique and humbling opportunity to contribute to the upcoming ceremony. Collaborating with a volunteer group of approximately 50 citizens, VBAC assisted in placing 404 American flags along the boulevards and around the Memorial grounds. Each flag represents a First Responder lost in the attacks, and they will remain in place until Saturday, September 16, 2023.

The VBAC members who actively participated in this meaningful community service event were President Jon Brothers, Secretary Larry Zerwig, Trustee Steve Phillips, and Terry Starr. Heartfelt thanks were extended to Cook Land Company and the California 9/11 Memorial Board for allowing VBAC to engage in this worthy initiative. Special appreciation was expressed to Jerry Cook and his staff, California 9/11 Memorial Executive Director Terra Brusseau, and Founding Board Member Jim Stemler. Their dedication to public education, especially through the One Voice competition, which encourages students to engage with the lessons learned during and after the events of September 11, is commendable.

The California 9/11 Memorial, located at 3485 Never Forget Lane in Clovis, California, is open to the public 24/7, 365 days a year. More information can be found online at california911memorial.com.
