2023 Run to Shaver Lake
By Morris Garagian
Bro Rich, our high country representative, had mentioned that the VBAC should consider a run up the hillside to Shaver Lake to partake of fresh boysenberry milkshakes. After about two minutes of consideration, Morris thought that was an outstanding idea, especially since the temperatures in the San Joaquin Valley were starting to make their tradition climb to the stratosphere.
The afternoon gathering consisted of Martin & Gwen with their modern MG (Miata MX5), Russ (TR-4), Terry & Joanie (TR-6), Peter (MGB), Bill & Christian (TR-6), and Morris (MGA) meeting at Academy Ave. & CA-168 for the excursion. After a brief discussion we were off with the Miata in the lead and Goblin sweeping. Martin opted to take the scenic route of Sample Rd. to Pittman Hill Rd. to Lodge Road before meeting Rich & Carolyn (Sunbeam Alpine) at Prather. After a short meeting, the group decided to continue the scenic route and take Auberry Road to the top of the 4 lane, by-passing the more heavily traveled 168.
As we climbed in elevation, and passed through the communities of Meadow Lakes, Alder Springs, and Pine Ridge, we were reminded of the devastation of the large wildfires that had affected this part of California in the recent past. Mother Nature is rebuilding and regrowing, but she has a long way to go.
Arriving at the Hungry Hut, we were able to obtain our dairy delights and were not disappointed. Thankfully, the straws were the diameters of water hoses so the berry seeds were easily passed but the onset of ‘brain freeze’ was intense.
After more conversation, some of the group visited the local annual Beerfest, but Morris had to investigate the lake height. After the abundant winter snowfall, the lake was quite a bit higher than in recent years. Great news for farmers in the Valley and agriculture in general!
Soon it was time to return the beasties to their stables and the downhill trek began, but we were all looking forward to our next outing.
